2009 – Week 9

First Things First

Chad Ochocinco tried to get an instant replay to go in his favor by plying the refs with $1. It didn’t work, the refs overturned his sideline catch. However, the Bengals came out ahead in the end! So bribery may have played a roll after all (or an improbably talented Bengals team). Now, am I saying that the commissioners of the Hiawatha leagues can be bought? There’s only one way to find out. On an unrelated note, I don’t like personal checks.
One place bribery was definitely not in play was in Tampa Bay. The Bucs got their first win of the season, topping the fading-fast Packers! Hooray for the Creamsicles!
Feast or famine! Points were plentiful for some in the League of Champions this week, while others failed to crack the 60 point mark. Here are the scores:
The Phantom Limbs (Peter) – 93
Mightiest Muffins (Mike) – 59
Pacifist Assassins (John) – 102
The Tortilla Chips (Darren) – 121
Grandma Nancy (Tyler) – 94
FAIL Team (Andy) – 81
The Bone Doctors (Chris W.) – 79
The Alchemists (Chris T.) – 58
Rusty Shackelford (Aaron) – 110
Bugabago Crashers (Eric) – 103
Russ’ Rowdy Rhinos (Russ) – 93
Taking Chances (Wayne) – 53
Many eyes were on the matchup between the #1 team and the #12 team. Grandma looked vulnerable, but FAIL couldn’t put together enough points to capitalize, losing by “only” 13. Russ’ Rhinos won handily, but has been eying his competition and lamented the fact that they didn’t score more than Grandma. The Chips, on the other hand, put up 121 to top the high scoring Assassins. Could the Chips be a playoff Dark Horse in the making? Rusty came out on top of an entertaining shootout, besting the Crashers. And in the battle between the Chris’s, Wachter prevailed for his 3rd win in a row! Break up the Bone Doctors! [get it?]
You’ll remember that the top 6 teams from each league will be eligible for the “winner’s league” next year, so the fight for that 6th spot (in both leagues) will be fun to watch the rest of the way. In the LoC there are 5 teams at either 4-4-1 or 4-5. The ties will complicate things, but only one team will make the cut.

Current LoC Standings:

The Premier League had its share of shootouts as well, but no sub-60s! Here are the scores:
Monday Night (Phil) – 97
Stalin of Style (Chris A.) – 75
Marshmallow Mateys (Cory) – 88
KRUG Kommanders (Denny & Isaac) – 64
diddy (Jim) – 115
Wyld Stallyns CS (Dave) – 101
Dead Heads (Nate) – 108
Kibbles & Vick (Frank) – 107
Egon’s Ego (Bernt) – 69
Beer Boys (Hyatt) – 80
Killer Canaries III (Bob) – 61
Mighty Nimrods (Tom) – 84
The Dead Heads with a huge win this week taking down the 3rd place Kibbles! Nice job, Nate! diddy and the Stallyns got into the shootout act with a high scoring affair. Of course, Jim came out on top. As in the League of Champions, the Premier League’s first place team looked slightly vulnerable. The Mateys put up “only” 88 points, but it was enough to beat the KRUGers and keep Cory’s winning streak alive (now at 8!!!). The bottom two teams played each other this week with the Nimrods getting their 2nd win of the season!
The Premier League also has a pileup for the 6th spot in the rankings with four teams tied at 4-5! Monday Night is the points leader of those four right now, but I’ve got the feeling there’s a lot of movement left in these standings before it’s over.

Team of the Week
Dead Heads! Jerry Garcia’s…er… I mean Nate Edward’s team wins it this week after a nail-biting 1 point win over the no-slouch Kibbles and Vick. That’s the kind of win you can build on! No time to stop and smell the “Sugar Magnolia“s, the Dead Heads are one of those 4-5 teams fighting for the 6th spot, another win might cause a “Ripple” effect! I’d watch out for the Dead Heads “Truckin‘” into the home stretch.
Lots to cover here!
First, there is a Thursday Night Game this week! The Bears and the 49ers will play at 7:20pm! Set your rosters early!
Second, the season is entering its final third! The Trade Deadline is approaching! After this Friday, there will be no trades allowed. However, the waiver and free agent process continues as usual. If you’ve been cooking up any trade scenarios, you’d better make your offers soon!
Finally, it’s the last of the bye weeks! The New York Giants and the Houston Texans will be golfing.
Until Next Week,
Commish Peter
