2011 – Week 1

blast logo.jpg

Well, here we are! After a long summer, football is finally back and the fans couldn’t be more excited. Especially this one:

I mean I elated at Harvin’s runback too but still.
But a little known fact is that roughly 50% of fantasy football teams lose week 1. Perhaps that was your team this week. For some of you, you knew you were in trouble as soon as your draft was over:

For others, it wasn’t until the waning moments of your game that you realized you’d lost:

Whatever the case may be, week 1 is always where smugness and/or panic seem to rule the leagues. So let’s try to sort things out a bit.

The season got started with some serious fireworks as many teams broke the century mark. Here are your LoC Scores:
The Phantom Limbs (Peter) – 85
J.A.W.S. (Dave) – 100
Marshmallow Mateys (Cory) – 86
KRUG Kommandant (Denny) – 79
Pacifist Assassins (John) – 104
Nana Nancy (Tyler) – 99
Monday Night (Phil) – 101
Mighty Muffins (Mike) – 70
team name pending (Aaron) – 61
Fumblecopter (Andy) – 113
The Cutlass Cieras (Chris W.) – 87
I’m Mr. T Sucka! (Eric) – 111
The story of week 1 in the LoC has to be the shootout between the Pacifist Assassins and Nana Nancy. Sunday afternoon, Tyler wrote “Got this one in the bag…”. By Monday night, he was saying “Seriously?!?!?”. Tom Brady’s big night snatched the victory for John’s team. I’m sure Tyler is already looking forward to another shot at John in week 12. Elsewhere, Fumblecopter scored the most points (in spite of the Pitt DEF scoring -3), but wasted them on the team that scored the least – team name pending. Mr. T rolled up the points too in defeating the Cieras (who relied on Vick and the Bears D for the bulk of their points). Monday Night charged into the LoC from the Toilet Bowl last year and made their presence known by defeating a perennial LoC team in the Muffins. The Mateys and KRUG played a tight game, but Brandon Marshall did enough to on Monday night to steal a victory for the MMs. And J.A.W.S. sensed blood in the water late Sunday night and quickly put away the Limbs in spite of Tobert’s valiant attempt to save the Commish’s team.

Points were plentiful in the PL too with four teams breaking a hundred and one team reaching to almost 140. What?! Looks like someone will have a target on their back next week. Here are the scores:
Mean Regressors (Chris A.) – 78
sasquatches r real (Darren) – 98
Waffle Housers (Nate) – 84
The Alchemist (Chris T.) – 117
Nerd Herd (Bob) – 81
Beer Boys (Hyatt) – 103
Blackhearts (Jon) – 104
a couple 13 14 wins (Wayne) – 84
The Russell (Russell) – 135
Glass Joe (Bernt) – 81
McChamps (Tom) – 83
diddy (Jim) – 74
Glass Joe didn’t stand a chance as Russell scored double digits from every roster spot but the kicker. Even with a healthy lead on Monday night, the gas pedal stayed down as Russ kept Wes Welker on the field and scored 28 statement points to bury Bernt. The other high scoring team was The Alchemist! What a feel-good story. After a long, hard season last year, The Alchemist cooked up 117 points (thanks in large part to Kenny Britt and the Raven’s D) and melted the Waffle Housers (though Nate had the foresight to start Steve Smith). The Beer Boys rolled up 103 on the Nerds and the Blackhearts put 104 on couple 13 14. Switch those matchups and we would have had a couple nailbiters! The Boys and ‘Hearts will mix is up next week though. Instead, the only really close game in the PL was between the McChamps and diddy. The Mcs pretty much had to draft Lesean McCoy and that was a good thing as his points couple with Brees’s helped compensate for the Pitt Defense debacle. And do you believe? Sasquatches just may be for real after taking down the Regressors behind Brady and the Bears.

team of the week logo.jpg
Last year, The Alchemist finished 3-10. His weekly average score was 65.15. His average margin of defeat was 24.08. In 2009, he finished 3-9-1 and averaged 75.77 points per week. In week 1 of 2011, he scored 117 points, got the victory and was named HFFUBTotW! Could this be the year!?! Congrats, Chris!

If you’re like me, week 1 revealed all the weaknesses in your team.

funny-gifs-snap-judgement.gif
Now the challenge is to figure out what needs to be done to address those weaknesses. Which undrafted players are worth your waiver money and which were just flashes in the pan (coughrandallcobbcough)? The waivers will expire tomorrow, so make your moves.

Great first week, everyone!
Until Next Week,
Commish Peter
