2011 – Week 2

With his team leading on Sunday night, Michael Vick found himself taking a helmet to helmet hit from his own lineman. He sat on the sidelines spitting up blood before making his way to the locker room to a chorus of boos from his old fans in Atlanta. As he exited, Vick smugly pointed to the scoreboard.
Sure enough, Matt Ryan and the Falcons responded with two late TDs and won the game. As Ryan exited the field, you knew it was coming.
The game isn’t over until it’s over. A number of fantasy games also came down to the wire and involved gaggles of points. In fact, the average number of points scored across both leagues this week was a staggering 103.8! I can’t ever remember seeing something like this. In fact, the server almost melted down from all the action and had to be modified.
Let’s dive in.

Only 4 teams in the LoC failed to crack 100 this week and two of them played each other. But what are the odds that the two highest scoring teams played each other too?? Can it get any wackier? Yes. Here are the scores:
The Phantom Limbs (Peter) – 83
Marshmallow Mateys (Cory) – 108
J.A.W.S. (Dave) – 114
I’m Mr. T Sucka! (Eric) – 107
Pacifist Assassins (John) – 84
KRUG Kommandant (Denny) – 96
Monday Night (Phil) – 125
Nana Nancy Unit (Tyler) – 125
team name pending (Aaron) – 93
The Almighty Muffins (Mike) – 112
The Cutlass Cieras (Chris W.) – 104
Fumblecopter (Andy) – 114
The weekends biggest shootout between Monday Night and Nana Nancy ended in a tie at 125! Tyler’s NYG defense took the field on Monday night and was able to scrape together enough points to pull off a tie after being down most of Sunday. Incredible end to an incredible game. Another close shootout took place between JAWS and Mr. T, but a goose egg by Antonio Gates really hurt Eric’s team and handed the win to Dave. Fumblecopter now sits atop the league after barely edging out the Cieras with a ten point win. The Limbs can’t seem to match the scoring explosion of the rest of the league and took a big loss to the Mateys this week. Ouch. A defensive slugfest between the Assassins and the Kommandant ended with Denny standing tall thanks, in part, to Tony Gonzalez (??). And the Muffins made some adjustments from their 70 point week 1 and scored 112 to beat Aaron’s team and keep him in the basement for now. The win had to have been bittersweet, however, as the Muffins lost their #1 pick, Jamaal Charles, for the year.

In the PL, the scores were still high, but more evenly distributed. No team failed to reach 90 points this week. Therefore, it was all about the matchups. Here are your scores:
Mean Regressors (Chris A.) – 90
diddy (Jim) – 113
sasquatches r real! (Darren) – 93
Waffle Housers (Nate) – 102
Nerd Herd (Bob) – 90
The Alchemist (Chris T.) – 126
Blackhearts (Jon) – 114
Beer Boys (Hyatt) – 92
The Russel (Russ) – 93
a couple 13 14 wins (Wayne) – 95
McChamps (Tom) – 121
Glass Joe (Bernt) – 96
The game of the week had to have been the tilt between The Russel and The Wayne. Wayne got the win behind another great scoring effort from the Lions D! Unfortunately, Wayne is the owner of Jamaal Charles in the PL, so his win also came at a heavy price. The Alchemist kept right on rolling this week and scored 126 to beat the Nerd Herd! 243 points in two weeks? The Alchemist is officially the Lions of the PL. Speaking of up and comers, how about the McChamps!?! After a couple of rough years, Tom’s team is 2-0 as well and looking promising after beating Glass Joe. diddy rebounded from a lackluster week 1 to score 113 and drop the Regressors to 0-2. The Blackhearts scored enough to get by the Beer Boys and currently sit at #2 in the league! And finally, the Waffle Housers and sasquatches played a tight game that came down to Monday night, where the NYG defense won it for the Housers.

12. Mean Regressors 0-2-0 .000 168 211 L-2 $100 2

The PL also boasts only 3 undefeated teams! Plenty of parity everywhere you look.

The McChamps! A 2-0 start is great for anyone, but Tom’s team last year had such hard times they changed their name to “quitters”. This year, his roster looks stacked and he’s averaging 102 points in his first two games. If The Alchemist is the Lions, The McChamps are the Buffalo Bills – putting hard times behind them and big numbers on the scoreboard. I’m already looking forward to week 5 when these two play each other. Could it be a PL Super Bowl preview!?

Injuries were happening all over the field this weekend. Besides Vick and Charles, there were Romo and Austin and many others who are now looking questionable for next week. It will be interesting to see if any teams pull the triggers on trades or just stick to the waiver wire to cure their ills. Either way, I expect rosters to change a lot in the next 5 days. After all, there are still 6 winless teams desperate for a win at any cost. Or are they secretly strong and waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike?
Until Next Week,
Commish Peter
