2012 – Week 11

Injuries are making the last few games of the regular season very, very interesting. Last week we saw a number of QBs go down, so this week featured a smorgasbord of backups trying to make names for themselves with varying results.

Nick Foles took the reigns from the injured and ineffective Michael Vick and tasting the misery that is the Eagles season. Hopefully he made it back in time for his Western Civ class.

The Steelers lost with Leftwich, the Bears lost with Campbell, the Cardinals have no idea what to do at the QB position and the 49ers invited a QB controversy after their rookie backup destroyed the Bears. The Jags lost, but they’re feeling good about the performance from their backup, Chad Henne, and he’s feeling pretty good about himself too.

But even the starters had their issues on Sunday, including 5 picks for the presumptive MVP Matt Ryan (though the Falcons still managed to beat the Cardinals, who have now 6 in a row after starting 4-0!).

All that drama meant that the fantasy scores were completely unpredictable. If you had the wrong QB in the game, your team was in for a wild ride. And with only two more games before the playoffs, there’s no room for error. Let’s get into it.

In the LoC, a flurry of trades were made leading up to Friday’s deadline. Did any of them have bearing on Sunday’s results? Here are the scores:

The Phantom Limbs (Peter) – 114
Lightning in a Bottle (Wayne) – 59

Blitzkrieg Bops (Mark) – 63
The Hit-Men (John) – 82

Beer Boys (Hyatt) – 54
Bye Week (Matt) – 108

Fumblecopter (Andy) – 81

Rüssnôçérôse (Russ) – 97

Cutlass Cieras RIP (Chris W.) – 73
Wyld Stallyns (Dave) – 36
Marshmallow Mateys (Cory) – 81
Unstoppable Machine (Tom) – 68
The Alchemist III (Chris T.) – 71
Lucha Libre Horrible (Nate) – 77
The Hit-Men were vulnerable this week as they watched Matt Ryan throw pick after pick, but the Bops were in no position to steal the win. Still reeling from losing Cutler AND Vick to injury, the Bops rolled the dice on John Skelton at QB.

Well, Skelton started 2 for 7 and 6 yards before the coach pulled him from the game. That’s a zero. The Bops two starting WR also registered zeros thanks to their respective backup QBs. If it weren’t for the 49ers defense, this game would have looked even worse. So the Hit-men survive a down week and now have sole possession of the best record in the league since all the other 7-3 teams lost this week! We mentioned the Bops loss, but Unstoppable Machine took a loss this week too – to the resilient Mateys! Cory’s team started 0-7 and now has 4 straight wins! Amazing turnaround! Lightning in a Bottle also lost this week to the Limbs, who traded for Andy Dalton this week and got rewarded with 24 points (of course they traded Shaub to get him and Shaub had 39 on the Hit-Men’s bench…). The Limbs are hoping this barrage of points is a sign of things to come! Bye Week took care of business this week against the Beer Boys and Matt’s team has won 3 straight in their push for a playoff spot! The last spot currently belongs to the Cieras, who crushing the Stallyns this week and their 36 point dud. Russ’s team is right in the mix for the 6th spot too, beating Fumblecopter this week by 16. And it looked like Lucha Libre’s torture was going to continue until Frank Gore got just enough to come from behind and win over The Alchemist!

With 4 teams at 7-4 and 2 at 6-5, it’s going to be a dogfight for that 6th playoff spot with only 2 games to go!!

The big question in the PL coming down the stretch may be regarding the 1st round playoff byes. Three teams are tied atop the standings right now, but one is trending in the wrong direction. Scores:

Pulp Extrapolation (Chris A.) – 109
Nana Nancy (Tyler) – 76

Gyro Gearloose (Bernt) – 90
El Tigre Chino (Darren) – 74

The Dominators (Spencer) – 79
you want more juice? (Aaron) – 127

The Matchless Muffins (Mike) – 82
Blackhearts (Jon) – 79

Purple Pride (Carl) – 62
diddy (Jim) – 86

Nerd Herd (Bob) – 51
WHAT!? (Eric) – 79

KRUG Kommandant (Denny) – 82
phillywindsurfin (Phil) – 89

After winning the prestigious HFFUBTotW award last week, KRUG turned to the task of playing one of the hottest teams in the PL: phillywindsurfin. It was a hard-fought battle, but philly came out on top thanks to his heavy reliance on Broncos players (Manning, Decker, Stokley and Prater). These two teams may meet again in the playoffs, but at this rate it may be in the title game! They sit atop the standings, both at 8-3. The other 8-3 team is Nana Nancy, who is going south in a hurry after holding down the top spot for weeks and weeks. This week, Tyler’s team got crushed by Pulp Extrapolation.

Pulp has flipped Nancy’s script and won 4 in a row to climb to the 4th spot! The 5th spot is occupied by diddy, whose hot and cold season was hot this week in beating Purple Pride. Another hot and cold team this year has been The Dominators. After starting 6-2, they’ve dropped 3 straight games. This week, Aaron’s team had a huge game and destroyed the Dominators behind Andre Johnson’s 33! The bottom of the standings was full of skirmishes this week too. Gyro Gearloose notched their 2nd win of the season and actually climbed up a spot by beating El Tigre! That’s a 4th straight loss for Darren’s squad. The Nerd Herd got beat by WHAT!? and Eric is now within striking distance of a playoff spot. But he’s jammed up with 4 other 5-6 teams, including the Muffins and Blackhearts, who played each other this week with the Muffins stealing a 3 point win. There’s a lot riding on these next two games!

Just like in the LoC, there’s a lot of drama surrounding that last playoff spot in the PL!

Pulp Extrapolation!! Chris’ team is averaging an incredible 115 points a week the last 4 weeks! But, as tends to happen, he will face his toughest opponents of the season here in the last 2 games: KRUG and Philly. So we will indeed see if this recent winning streak is a trend or just a collection of outliers. His season seems to be riding on RG3, who was a steal in the 6th round (he went in the 2nd round in the LoC).

Remember there are 3 Thursday games this week for Thanksgiving!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, there are only 2 games left in the fantasy regular season! A lot can happen, so don’t give up hope for your team! Remember, the last two teams in each league will not make even the Toilet Bowl. They have a chance to move up through the League Pick’em standings, but their fantasy season will be over. What those two teams do during the playoffs is up to them.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Until Next Week,
Commish Peter
