2012 – Playoffs Week 2

Inline image 1

When your season, and maybe your job, is on the line, you need your team to perform up to their full potential. When they don’t, things get ugly in a hurry (as the Lions coaching staff learned the hard way on Sunday, losing to the Cardinals?!).

This week was all about under-performances from seemingly solid teams. You had the Patriots losing to the 49ers and their rookie QB. You had playoff positioned Bucs losing to the Saints 41-0! You had the Ravens getting stomped by the unstoppable Broncos. Oh, and the Giants losing to the Falcons 34-0!! Oof. And of course, the amazing Raiders/Chiefs game that ended 15-0. What a thriller between two legit teams!!! I don’t know why, but this picture comes to mind:

How did all that weird action play out in the fantasy leagues in the most crucial week of the season so far?! Well, as is often the case, 50% of the teams came out very unhappy while the other 50% were ecstatic.

Let’s break down the action.

This week brought in the top two seeded teams off their byes. How would they fare after a week of rest? Scores:
Playoffs:
The Phantom Limbs (Peter) – 79
Unstoppable Machine (Tom) – 98
Blitzkrieg Bops (Mark) – 64
The Hit-Men (John) – 85
5th Place Game:
Cutlass Cieras (RIP) (Chris W.) – 101
Lightning in a Bottle (Wayne) – 90
Toilet Bowl:
Beer Boys (Hyatt) – 133
Marshmallow Mateys (Cory) – 84
Wyld Stallyns (Dave) – 66
Bye Week (Matt) – 83
11th Place Game:

Rüssnôçérôse (Russ) – 63

The Alchemist III (Chris T.) – 51
So the Super Bowl Matchup is set: Unstoppable Machine vs. The Hit-Men. The regular season’s top two teams meeting in the ultimate game. Tom easily got by the Limbs this week as Peter got a zero from the previously red-hot Danario Alexander. The Hit-Men looked vulnerable this week, but Mark’s team imploded as the historically rock-solid RB tandem of Rice and Martin combined for a whopping 5 points. What?! All that sets up the Super Bowl that fans have been waiting all season for! In the 5th place game, Chris got by Wayne by 11. That means that Wayne lost out in the playoffs and will be heading to the PL next year.
In the Toilet Bowl, the Beer Boys continue to roll over their opponents. His highest scorer this week was the frustrating Cardinals D, who scored -1 last week and 26 this week. The Beer Boys will meet Bye Week next week with a ticket back to the LoC on the line! For the Mateys and the Stallyns, no matter what happens in their 9th place game next week, the PL is their home next year. As is the case for Russ and Chris T., who sleepwalked through their 11th place game this week with Russ coming out ahead. These games are all about getting that extra “Power Point” for the All-Time Rankings

Okay, now let’s get to the THE STORY of the weekend. It happened again the the PL this week. And I don’t have a category for what I’m seeing. Scores:
Playoffs:
Pulp Extrapolation (Chris A.) – 117
diddy (Jim) – 74
Nana Nancy (Tyler) – 110
phillywindsurfin (Phil) – 104
5th Place Game:
KRUG Kommandant (Denny) – 79
The Dominators (Spencer) – 61
Toilet Bowl:
you want more juice (Aaron) – 101
Purple Pride (Carl) – 90
Gyro Gearloose (Bernt) – 56
WHAT!? (Eric) – 106
11th Place Game:
Blackhearts (Jon) – 68
The Matchless Muffins (Mike) – 84
Last week, Tyler ousted Denny thanks to an offensive fumble recovery for a TD, which was noted on the scoreboard with an asterisk an a note that the points were scored “in a category not normally associated with this player”. Well, this week….it happened again.

Frank Gore picked up an offensive fumble near the goal line and managed to dart in for 6 points. The difference in the game? Oh yeah, 6 points. Tyler wins…again. And the #1 seeded Phil goes down despite putting up 104. Phil had handed Tyler his first loss of the season back in week 9, so the Tyler Leeper Tour of Vengeance rolls on.

The other side of the bracket saw Chris Anderson keep on rolling and destroy diddy on his way to the PL Super Bowl. Despite being hampered by the crappy Rice/Martin RB Combo this week and getting a zero from the Browns D, Chris got huge games from Dennis Pitta and Colin Kaepernick. Onward and upward! I must say, the PL Ballerina Trophy would look great in a baby girls room. In the 5th place game, Denny delivered the KO punch to keep Spencer in the PL next year and vaulting Denny into the LoC.
In the PL Toilet Bowl, Eric and Aaron will duke it out next week for a ticket to the LoC. Eric’s team has caught fire in recent weeks and Aaron has also looked strong, so it should be a good matchup. For Gyro and Purple Pride, they will place for 9th place next week and their dignity. And speaking of dignity, the Muffins ended their season on a mediocre note, beating the Blackhearts for 11th place overall.

I cannot in good conscience give this to anyone but Tyler this week. Nana Nancy is winning games in the most improbable ways possible right now. The rest of us can only look and seethe. Here are a few reactions I saw to his box score this week:

Okay, folks. It’s now officially SUPER BOWL WEEK! Four teams are competing for real, actual trophies! Four other teams are competing for invites to the LoC next season!! The rest of us are competing for pride and Power Points. We’ll break it all down next week, just in time for Christmas. Good luck, everyone!
Until Next Week,
Commish Peter
