2013 – Playoffs Week 1

If you turned on almost any game on Sunday, you were in for a treat. A huge weather system was dumping snow on many outdoor games, making for some pretty brutal conditions on the field and some really entertaining games! You’d think that scoring would have been down across the board and games would have become defense slop-fests, but actually there were 88 TDs scored on Sunday – an NFL record! Bizarre. The Eagles and Lions game was probably the worst for snow. Here’s how the game opened:

Five inches of snow accumulated during the game and half of it ended up in Calvin Johnson’s facemask:
The Vikings/Ravens game was one for the ages and one in which the Vikings appeared to win TWICE before actually losing. There were 5 TDs in the last 2:05 of the game. Thrilling! But the Vikings just had a bad day overall. First, Adrian Peterson got hurt. Then they almost got run over by the snow plow on the field.

There were a number of blown calls that hurt them in the game. Then they lost the game.

But they couldn’t leave because the catering truck had hit their plane. They were stranded at the stadium for THREE HOURS after they were scheduled to leave. Yuck.
So 88 TDs were scored on Sunday, that must have meant that week 1 of the fantasy playoffs had plenty of offensive fireworks! Let’s see who moved on and who has been eliminated from LoC contention after a losing in the first round. Because remember, the only teams that can move up are those that finish in the top 3 in the playoff bracket and the 1 who wins each Toilet Bowl bracket. A loss this week means neither of those scenarios will happen, so it’s do or die for the LoC this week!
Spoiler alert #1: it was a VERY good week to be a 6th seed.
Spoiler alert #2:

With 4 teams having playoff byes, there were only 4 games in each league. In the LoC, there was really only 1. Scores:
Week 14 – Final Results
The only game that was close was between the Limbs and the Masons. The difference in this game was Chris’ decision on Saturday to pick up and start Andy Dalton over Philip Rivers OR Matt Ryan. A gutsy call that was destined to make or break him. In the end, Dalton’s 30 points were the difference makers. The Limbs were down 20 going into Monday night with Tony Romo yet to play. But Romo was hamstrung when the Cowboys defense couldn’t get off the field and let the Bears suck up the clock and the points. With the Limbs needing 4 points for a win, the Cowboys were down big and poised for one last drive and….they pulled Romo and put in Kyle Orton – killing any hope of a pride-saving TD and a win for the Limbs. In the “hindsight” department, the Limbs put Keenan Allen in at flex on Sunday morning, only to waffle back to Chris Johnson. Allen’s game-saving points languished on the bench. A small mistake with big consequences.

The rest of the LoC was blow-out city. The 6th seed Bops destroyed Monday Night and struck fear into the heart of the Muffins, who are next in the playoff bracket. 5th seed DiDDy came up big and blew out Nana Nancy, whose up and down season will lead them down to the a lower league next year. In the LoC Toilet Bowl, 12th seed Ray Rice’s Team has awoken! Aaron’s squad put up 107 to crush KRUG and move on. Aaron’s team won with a solid all-around effort, except for the Dallas Defense, which scored -3. Yuck.

More blowouts in the PL, where the parity seems to have evaporated for the most part. Scores:
Week 14 – Final Results

In the playoff bracket, we saw 6th seed Carl thrash the Eh Team and crush their LoC dreams by 26 points. The other game was closer, but Dream Hands watched in horror when Adrian Peterson went down with and injury. It was the opening that Matt needed and the USFL capitalized on the opportunity, beating Chris and moving on.
In the Toilet Bowl, it was The Outlaws showing that they truly are an all or nothing team, winning big this week over Chobani. Jake’s team could cruise through the Toilet Bowl and punch his LoC ticket or he could flame out next week and only score 50. There’s just no way of knowing. Then the really weird one: the Moneyballers and Big Hassle TIED this week! Unfortunately for Isaac, ties go to the higher seed and Brett moves on. Wild stuff.

The talking points hold true in the EL too. A couple close games and a couple big blow outs. Here are the scores:
Week 14 – Final Results

In the playoff bracket, it was all lopsided affairs. 6th seed Pacino showed that they belong in the playoffs, beating the tough Harper’s Team handily and advancing on the back of LeSean McCoy. The other side of the bracket saw the Goldfinches beat the Bulldogs by 18 and move on. The Bulldogs’ inaugural season will not lead them to the LoC next year.
In the Toilet Bowl, Nudibranch squeaked out a 2 point win in a shootout over Ivan Drago to keep their dreams alive for another week. And Los Perdadores got a 5 point win over the H-Ikes, who almost managed a win even though they’ve been sleepwalking for most of the season.

Since all the 6th seeds won this week (!), this was a tough call, but I’m giving it too…. Team Pacino!

Brian won in impressive fashion, scoring 119 to beat Hyatt. His squad could be primed for a solid playoff run! But next week he draws Chad’s team, which will not be an easy game. Maybe this award will be the motivation he needs to introduce Chad to his “little friend” – LeSean McCoy:

The Thursday game this week is the Chargers and Broncos, so there are some very fantasy-relevant players that will be on the field early. Don’t let your season slip away because you forgot to plug in your Thursday players!
And don’t let good waiver or free agent players pass by that will help your team! As Chris showed last Saturday, one good pickup can save your season at this point! You can play it safe, or seize the moment and run right by everyone! And with the LoC metric so tight this year, you can’t afford to miss those opportunities! It seems like every year a team comes out of nowhere to make some serious noise at this point in the season.

Who will it be this year?! One of these 6th seed upstarts?! Only 2 weeks left to find out! Good luck, everyone!
Until Next Week,
Commish Peter
